2 Weeks of Fun... on tour in Europe

this europe trip has been great - it's such a nice happening when things just fall into place above and beyond my expectations. kicked off the two weeks with some london hang and studio mixdowns (new tracks for the funktioneers are mixed, also keep an eye out for a fresh remix for rob van de wouw's album i produced too), then it was straight to norway for the sildajazz festival... played 3 nights there at the very intimate cafe moody. soweto kinch joined me on sax for the first two nights, vanessa freeman for nights 2 and 3. fantastic vibes all around :) toni kofi opened for two of the nights and smashed it, and the lionel hampton tribute band was also on the festival, so was cool to have the likes of nicholas payton and teodross avery in the audience hanging too.

after norway, it was a quick london one nighter to celebrate my birthday - that was quite some hang, really nice to see london friends and fam to celebrate and see in another year on planet earth! - and it was off again early the next morning to padova, italy. plane mishap #2 of the trip - once again my ill-fated korg radias never turned up... they upgraded me to business class but couldn't get my luggage to the destination with me !?! c'MON british airways. mishap #1 was on the flight from LA to london, and someone is an ipod full of iLL tunes richer now - altho realistically, whoever found it would have probably just deleted it all and been happy with a blank new ipod :( ....

i was in venice italy a few months back playing at a great spot called elefante rosso. on that gig i met tommasso cappellato who played drums for the gig. we hit it off and over the following weeks laid plans to hit studio some time together and see what comes of it. yesterday we made that happen. we hit a studio near padova - tommasso on drums, and marcello allulli on tenor sax + effects pedals joining me on a pretty mental rig - korg ms-10, yamaha cs-15, rhodes, mpc, grand piano...

with no preconceived ideas, tunes or plans we hit 4 sets of straight up improv madness and mayhem. somewhere between jazz and the mpc twist up we explored every corner we could and by the end of the day had about 5 hours of music in the can. i'm not sure what form the music will take in the end, but there's at least a couple of albums worth of material for this new project, and it will definitely see light of day when it's ready :) the whole day was broadcast on ustream.tv as well - thanks for dropping by those who did!

a fantastic day of so much music was capped off with a couple of padova sites - including prato della valle and the tower which was galileo galilei's observatory where he made his biggest astronomical discoveries.. history!

today i'm heading to switzerland for a few days chill and two radio show promos in basel and zurich (thursday for livingroom.fm stadtmusik 107.6 fm and friday for rundfunk.fm), then it's back to london to celebrate phil asher's inspiration information clubnite's 12th birthday at east village - i might even drop a lil keyboard action alongside the fam :) and wrap up the two weeks with studio with bembe segue. <--- she played me some demos the other day that are JAW DROPPING. hopefully people get to share in those some time.

in the meantime, some really exciting things falling into place for the next few months - shows, studio projects... word on all that very soon!

9 Minutes of Fun - restless soul

check the new restless soul/phil asher EP 'ONE' out now on traxsource - including the epic joint '9 Minutes of Fun' which i feature on keys for a deep instrumental house dancefloor workout. phil's one of the illest there is in the house game, and we definitely had (9 minutes of) fun making this track. phil had the beats rolling and i jumped on the juno 106 and synths dropping whatever came to mind. quality.

Laurent Garnier - I loooOOOve the 9 minutes tracks, it's brilliant, you can be sure that i will hammer this everywhere.

Kai Alce - 9 Minutes of Fun - Here Phil & Mark come out jabbin with lots of stabs & groovin percussion in tribal wallshaker!

Phil Asher
Restless Soul Presents "ONE" (Restless Soul Music)
Review by: Terry Matthew
5 Magazine, September 2009
http://www.5chicago.com

No idea if he's set off a challenge to himself or is simply kicking his already prodigious production schedule into overtime, but Phil Asher will not stop until he has a shelf of his own in my record collection. Phlash is now averaging a new release every two weeks by my count, including a new banger every month on his own Restless Soul Music imprint. "ONE" is to be the first (obviously) in a series of numbered EPs, and both that title and "Blueberry Planets", the name of one of the tracks here, suggests he's making tracks faster than he can name them. The aforementioned "Blueberry Planets" has that headtrippy sort of vibe that some Americans latched on to some years ago and called "Intelligent Dance Music", or IDM (and I'm told Brits find that label absolutely hilarious). Being a Phil Asher release, however, the tracks here veer off into wildly different directions. The three mixes of "9 Minutes of Fun" (featuring Mark de Clive-Lowe) are the hidden gems here -- the tracky/tribal riffing that Phil did so well on "Revolution = Solution". "The Weight" is more funked up than I've heard from the man in awhile, while "They Heard" is just a raucous bit of samplerific fun. [ - TM - ]

restless soul pres. Lady Alma Call Him (Soul Heaven Records)

Philadelphia's First Lady of House, Lady Alma in collaboration with the UK's restless soul aka Phil Asher with keys and bass by MdCL, lovingly mixed down by Toni Economides and out now on Soul Heaven Records... a HEAVY slice of gospel house... nuff said! ;)

Restless Soul ft. Lady Alma
"Call Him" (Soul Heaven)
Review by: Rees Urban
5 Magazine, September 2009
http://www.5chicago.com

The workhorse called Phil Asher returns with Lady Alma (who is full speed ahead herself) with another sure to be favorite deep tune. The bassline is funky as always and Alma's vocals are flawless as expected. If you prefer there's also the Deep Dub which is simply that; a stripped down version with minor vocal parts, easing pads and a percussive workout. To top it off you have Mark de Clive-Lowe adding his signature touch. Here's another perfect summertime tune for people to enjoy worldwide. [ - Urban - ]

Dam Funk feat MdCL... Toeachizown Vol. 2: Fly

Dam Funk - Toeachizown Vol. 2: Fly
http://www.stonesthrow.com/store/album/damfunk/toeachizown-vol-2-fly

it was my pleasure to drop a lil seasoning and extra flavor on Dam Funk's album - the track 'Candy Dancin' featuring synth and vocoder guest spot by yours truly.... congratulations to dam on the release and big up stones throw!

dam and i had been talking about collab'ing on something for a minute, so when he hit me up to drop a vibe on this track, it was ON. usually with a keys session i'll send back the keys parts and the artist/producer will mix them down and finish off any production how they want. this was different tho and more on the old school tip - dam bounces his tracks as he makes them - that basically means that there's no logic or pro tools arrangement and no computer. he records each part onto the previous part as he goes... no undo, no re-do, no re-edit, it drops to the tape (figuratively speaking) exactly as it happens. i love the whole idea of that, catch a vibe and that's what it is. i used the korg radias for a synth solo and added some vocoder as well - dam told me the joint was called "candy dancing" when he sent it to me so added a lil bit of that vibe with the vocoder.

looking forward to hitting some more music with dam in the not too distant!

Montreal Drum Fest 2009... special guesting with Lil John Roberts

i'm really looking forward to this - lil john roberts and i first played together at the montreux jazz festival atlanta edition thanks to julie dexter bringing him onto our gigs we were doing there together. from the first hit, we had such a blast and every and any time we've had a chance to play together since then, we make sure to hit it. some LA fam would have seen him with me at the vanguard lounge last november, there's hours of studio jamming and pre-production we've recorded just the two of us in atlanta, and trio with pino palladino on bass in london... hmmm.. must delve into that material some time soon ;)

so... john's asked me to guest with him at the montreal drum fest in october. it's one of the main drum festivals worlwide and mannn, we're going to have FUN. with the likes of NDUGU, dennis chambers, cindy blackman, luisito quintero and more up in the spot, it's going to be nuts.

montreal fam.... see you there!
