Europe soon come!

in a couple of weeks' time i'm heading to europe for 2 weeks - it's a quick trip and going to be jam packed with a lot of activity :) just how i like it!

the exclusive shows will be at the silda jazz festival in haugesund, norway. i've played the fest a couple of times, and was at the same venue, cafe moody, a couple of months ago. it's a really intimate and great vibe little spot run by a great crew, and i'm really looking forward to getting back there for a three night run august 13-15: 13th: featuring soweto kinch / 14th: featuring soweto kinch + special guest / 15th: featuring vanessa freeman. most of you will know vanessa's been mashing up a lot of shows with me over the past year - one of the UK's illest on the microphone, it's going to be a blast to get it together again. soweto is one of my favorite sax players anywhere - and a really unique MC as well. we havent played a lot together - a week in brasil collaborating with drumagick, and an improv show in warsaw a while back doing a silent film soundtrack freesoul style. definitely looking forward to whatever madness our norway shows bring ;)

as well as that, there's a couple of promo radio show events in switzerland - august 20 in basel and 21 in zurich, and some studio planned with phil asher (more restless soul runnings!), mixing down tracks for the funktioneers album featuring baby sol and shea soul, recording with queen b aka bembe segue, and one day of recording in italy with drummer tommaso cappellato. i met tommaso on the last europe tour when i played elefante rosso in venice. he's very much in the NY-jazz vibe of playing and we had a whole lot of fun on that gig. as a result of that meeting, we've decided to hit studio for a day while i'm over and record a deep free-jazz-meets-the-mashi-beats album. one of his mentors in NYC was mr harry whitaker so maybe we'll be tipping the hat a lil to black rennaisance ;)

it's going to be a crazy couple of weeks away - looking forward to seeing my europe friends and fam. sorry there aren't more shows this trip, but soon come with the next one!

between now and then, between some beach action, there's remixes for jody watley and cherie mathieson to get done and a couple other secret missions.... ;) news as it happens...

Thank you NYC and Philly!

i've just got back to LA from a fantastic four days out on the east coast. three dope shows, plenty of music and lots of catch up with old and new fam and friends.

first up was the carmina soul party in brooklyn - gotta biggup chris annibell for making this happen. chris had been telling me about this party for a year or more and we finally got me there. up til now all my NY shows had been in manhattan so that was something in itself - finally hitting one in brooklyn :) when chris took me down to the venue space to setup i was blown AWAY. it's an open air courtyard in the middle of a huge industrial building that now houses art spaces and studios.

gotta thank spinna, dego and ethan from tortured soul for helping out with the backline - you all helped make it happen big time! thank you :) professional crew, a really great space and huge batches of home made sangria, the scene was set for a dope night ahead. it was a mad busy day for music in NY in general - q-tip, little dragon and benji b played summerstage in central park that afternoon - gutted i missed that - king sunny ade played brooklyn and sy smith and peven everett both had manhattan shows too. for those who reached all of those shows - what a day eh! :)

the carmina soul party was an iLL vibe. great to see benji b, ge-ology, waajeed, moni and mike from friends we love and plenty more good peeps. everyone was there for the vibe, the party and to dance :) the highlight for me was clear tho: the first time i heard sandra st victor (of the family stand / ghetto heaven) sing she was on BVs with karen bernod for a chaka khan gig in hammersmith, london. near the end of the show, chaka gave each BV singer 8 bars. sandra and karen both threw it down PROPER. sandra and i got in contact online and when this brooklyn party came up i invited her to come down and jam. straight freesoul style, no prep, no plan. sandra was excited about it and we met for the first time about an hour before i went on stage. i kicked off with a lil instrumental jackson vibe a la heartbreak hotel and then got sandra up on the mic and it was ONNNNN.

there are only a few singers i'm 100% confident to drop a full improv set with and honestly not knowing how sandra would drop it, i was blown away. all the soul, funk, jazz, and even the abstract opera vibe was there. it was a real treat, and i know a lot of people there got to hear sandra for the first time that night. ("WHO was that singer???"... ummm you need to know!). we're definitely going to link up more in the future and i'm looking forward to that very much. video clips to come... :)

with friendswelove.com crew moni and mike

after a few hours sleep i was on the train to philly to play the legendary sundae philadelphia party. it's a weekly outdoor summer house party, all ages at the piazza at schmidt's. with a whole lot of market stalls around the area, a great sound system and about 3,000 people including kids, fire-dancers and plenty of music heads, it was a really nice vibe. great to go straight from playing outdoor in brooklyn to another outdoor in philly :) lee jones has been running the sundae party for a few years now and it's a real house music institution in philly (in fact sundae LA has just started too!). full philly crew came out to check and support, great to meet you all :)

i had lady alma on mic for that show - i know that was a special treat for the philly crowd too, to have their one and only lady alma rocking the mic so damn hard and funky. we had a great time - everytime we play together we love it and this was definitely a special one. alma ended the whole set accapella without her mic just SINGING it. dope vibe for sure. video clips to come for that show too.

sundae philadelphia

to wrap up the trip, monday was king britt's clubnite back 2 basics at the (also legendary philly institution) silk city. it's a great vibe smaller club and being a monday night, definitely all about people out for the MUSIC. king played a nice set of boom bap alt soul, the resident band smacked it up with some freestyle jams and i dropped an hour of dancefloor mayhem ;) was good to hear some new productions on the system there - sy smith 'truth', lady alma 'call him'.. tunes you'll be hearing about in due time for sure ;)

big up the philly fam - lady alma, lee jones, king britt, james poyser, anthony tidd, dozia, and especially rich medina and fam. cant wait to get back there again!

the flight home was longgggggg... delays, transfers, delays, but it's all good. back in LA again and ready to hit some studio for more mashibeats... :)

and another week in LA... east coast HEADS UP!

i love that a week can go by here and i've managed to spend time on the bike riding around the beach, getting plenty of sun, swimming in the pacific ocean, eating great fresh food and making some dope music with good people :) life is blessed!

this week i finished mixdown for the new collaboration: MdCL presents SY SMITH - 'TRUTH'.

there's the original mix which is a club-soul joint and the remix, a more straight 4/4 tech-soul affair strictly for the dancefloor. watch out for previews soon on soundcloud and the exclusive release on traxsource in the coming months followed by full worldwide release. if you don't know about sy, check her out. one of the illest and most soulful singers anywhere.

i'd met shafiq husayn (from SA-RA) at the art don't sleep jam session a few weeks back and a chance conversation at a party last friday with another mutual friend ended up with me doing a remix for shafiq's forthcoming solo album project on plug research. i got the parts for the remix on saturday, a downtempo afro styled vibe called NIRVANA. saturday and sunday evenings i did the remix, bringing it up to dancefloor tempo and ended up with a fela-meets-detroit tech kind of vibe. by 10pm sunday night it was on its way to mixdown, and now it's off to mastering and will be on the first 12" from shafiq's project 'Shafiq En A Free Ka'. check the album preview - including the original version of 'nirvana' here...

it was a pleasure to work with shafiq's material and flip it in a direction that's definitely in a different space but still keeping that nutty experimental vibe that he's so fresh with.

gonna squeeze some more beach in before heading to the east cost this weekend...

SATURDAY 18 JULY - carmina soul @ the old iron works in brooklyn... the official giant step after party for the summerstage show which features q tip, little dragon and benji b. the carmina soul party's hosted by afrokinetic's chris annibell and i'll be dropping a live freesoul set with very special guests including sandra st victor of the family stand... on stage about 1am

SUNDAY 19 JULY - sundae @ piazza at schmidts, illadelphia
... the legendary sundae philadelphia party and finally, my debut show in one of the illest musical cities there is. live set featuring none other than philly's first lady of soul lady alma on mic. gonna be VIBES. on stage 8pm

MONDAY 20 JULY - back2basics @ silk city, illadelphia... two nights in a row in philly ? say WHAT ?!? :) spinning a DJ set at king britt's (also legendary) monday night music institution.

i'm looking forward to the trip, seeing all you east coast fam over the weekend and bringing the music. some fresh from the studio exclusives to be road tested on monday @ sylk130 for sure.

peace!

HVW8 Super Session... sicking it down with Chris Bailey on drums

kinda unusual to spend sunday afternoon chilling in an art gallery banging out beats while the peeps hang outside on the sidewalk kicking back, hanging and getting their barbecue on... but that's how we do!

one of my favorite beats from that afternoon for sure... the clip ends just before laurnea jumped up and kiLLLLLed it some more.

check the podcast for full audio... no setlists, no rehearsal, no plans... just vibing out on a sunny sunday afternoon
